Updated October 21, 2026. The largest wind farm in the world is Hami, in China's Xinjiang region, with 11,947 MW of installed capacity, according to Wikipedia's list of onshore wind farms, which compiles data from operators, governments and trade press. It is followed by Guazhou, in Gansu, at 10,450 MW. Outside China, the record belongs to SunZia, in New Mexico (United States), with 3,650 MW and 916 turbines, which began commercial operation in June 2026, according to the US Energy Information Administration (EIA).
In Chile, the largest is Colbún's Horizonte, in Taltal, with 816 MW and 140 turbines, in commercial operation since September 2025. It is fourteen times smaller than Hami. Records for other technologies are in the largest solar plant in the world.
Ranking of the largest wind farms in the world in 2026
This ranking distinguishes between wind complexes, which group several farms owned by different companies in one area, such as Hami or Guazhou, and single wind farms, such as SunZia. The table includes both and flags offshore farms:
| # | Wind farm | Country | Capacity | Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hami | China (Xinjiang) | 11,947 MW | Onshore complex |
| 2 | Guazhou (Jiuquan base) | China (Gansu) | 10,450 MW | Onshore complex, multiple farms |
| 3 | SunZia | United States (New Mexico) | 3,650 MW | Onshore farm, 916 turbines |
| 4 | Hinggan League | China (Inner Mongolia) | 3,000 MW | Onshore |
| 5 | Dabancheng | China (Xinjiang) | 2,500 MW | Onshore |
| 6 | Qingyang Huanxian Huaneng | China (Gansu) | 2,270 MW | Onshore |
| 7 | Mori | China (Xinjiang) | 2,200 MW | Onshore complex |
| 8 | Markbygden | Sweden | 2,007 MW | Onshore, Europe's largest |
| 9 | Lagoa dos Ventos | Brazil (Piauí) | ~1,500 MW | Onshore complex, South America's largest |
| 10 | Muppandal | India (Tamil Nadu) | 1,500 MW | Onshore complex |
| — | Hornsea 2 | United Kingdom | 1,386 MW | Largest offshore farm in operation |
| — | Horizonte | Chile (Taltal) | 816 MW | Chile's largest |
SunZia does not appear with its full capacity in the Wikipedia list; we use the EIA figure, the official US source. Lagoa dos Ventos' capacity is the one reported by Enel Green Power, which presented it as the largest wind farm in operation in South America after completing its expansion in April 2024. The figures for the Chinese complexes come from the Wikipedia list and may differ from other sources.

Hami and Guazhou: what the largest wind farms in the world look like
The two Chinese giants are not single projects but wind bases that China's government planned in windy, sparsely populated desert areas in the west of the country. Hundreds of farms owned by different state companies are grouped in one area and connected to ultra-high-voltage lines that carry power to cities in the east, more than 2,000 kilometres away.
The Jiuquan base, where Guazhou is located, was planned with a 20,000 MW target, according to the same Wikipedia list. That model has a cost: for years China had high levels of curtailment (wind power that could not be used for lack of lines), a problem northern Chile now faces with solar power.
SunZia, the largest wind farm outside China
SunZia, developed by Pattern Energy, is the largest renewable energy project in US history. Its 916 turbines in central New Mexico total 3,650 MW, more than three times the capacity of the country's next largest farms, Alta Wind in California (1,098 MW) and Great Prairie in Texas (1,027 MW), according to the EIA. Construction began in 2023, after almost two decades of permitting.
The farm comes with its own line: a 550-mile high-voltage direct current line to Arizona with capacity for 3,021 MW, of which 2,131 MW will be consumed in Southern California, according to the EIA.
| Wind record | Farm | Figure |
|---|---|---|
| World's largest wind complex | Hami (China) | 11,947 MW |
| Largest wind farm outside China | SunZia (US) | 3,650 MW, 916 turbines |
| Europe's largest onshore wind farm | Markbygden (Sweden) | 2,007 MW |
| Largest offshore wind farm in operation | Hornsea 2 (UK) | 1,386 MW, 165 turbines |
| Largest offshore farm under construction | Hornsea 3 (UK) | 2,900 MW, due in 2027 |
| South America's largest wind farm | Lagoa dos Ventos (Brazil) | ~1,500 MW |
| Chile's largest wind farm | Horizonte (Taltal) | 816 MW, 140 turbines |

The largest offshore wind farms in the world
At sea, farms are smaller but their turbines much larger. The United Kingdom dominates the ranking, according to Wikipedia's list of offshore wind farms:
| # | Offshore farm | Country | Capacity | Turbines | Year |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Hornsea 2 | United Kingdom | 1,386 MW | 165 | 2022 |
| 2 | Hornsea 1 | United Kingdom | 1,218 MW | 174 | 2019 |
| 3 | Seagreen | United Kingdom | 1,075 MW | 114 | 2023 |
| 4 | Moray East | United Kingdom | 950 MW | 100 | 2022 |
| 5 | Greater Changhua 1 and 2A | Taiwan | 900 MW | 111 | 2024 |
Under construction are Hornsea 3 (2,900 MW), Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind in the United States (2,640 MW) and Baltica 2 in Poland (1,498 MW), all due in 2027. The Dogger Bank complex in the North Sea will total 3,600 MW in three phases when complete. Chile has no offshore wind farms.
The largest wind farm in Chile and Latin America
Colbún's Horizonte, in the municipality of Taltal (Antofagasta), is Chile's largest wind farm, with 816 MW, 140 turbines and an investment of more than US$900 million. Its northern section entered operation on June 2, 2025 and the southern one on September 2, according to Colbún. The company presented it as the second-largest wind farm in Latin America.
In the region, the largest is Enel's Lagoa dos Ventos, in the Brazilian state of Piauí, at about 1,500 MW. Brazil concentrates the region's large wind complexes thanks to steady winds on its northeast coast. In Chile, several wind farms are still waiting for permits or transmission lines, as we reported on the stalled wind farms in Los Ríos.
In the south, Ñuble is one of the regions that approved the most wind projects in the past year, as we detailed in the nearly 1,000 MW of renewables approved in Ñuble.
Ever-larger turbines
Dividing capacity by the number of turbines shows how wind turbines have grown. At SunZia, each turbine averages about 4 MW (3,650 MW across 916 turbines); at Horizonte, about 5.8 MW (816 MW across 140); and at the Hornsea 2 offshore farm, about 8.4 MW (1,386 MW across 165). At sea, where installing each turbine is expensive, it pays to use the largest possible.
An important caveat: capacity in MW shows how much a farm can produce with enough wind, not how much energy it generates in a year. Two farms of the same size can produce very different amounts depending on the quality of the wind in their area. That is why offshore farms, with stronger and steadier winds, generate more energy per installed MW than many onshore farms.
Methodology
Capacities are from Wikipedia's lists of onshore and offshore wind farms, reviewed in October 2026, except SunZia (EIA, June 2026), Lagoa dos Ventos (Enel Green Power) and Horizonte (Colbún). Figures for Chinese complexes group several farms and may differ from other sources. We will update this ranking on this same page when the record changes.
