Electric bed warmer: how much power it uses, what it costs in Chile and which to buy (single, double or king)

An electric bed warmer (in Chile, a *calientacamas*) is one of the heating appliances that uses the least electricity. Single models draw 60 W and double models, with two controls, 120 W in total, according to the product sheets of Siegen, one of the best-selling brands in Chile. With electricity at CLP 255.27 per kWh, warming a double bed for one hour costs about CLP 31, and doing it every day for a month, less than CLP 1,000.

The comparison with an electric heater is huge: a 2,000 W heater uses in one hour what a double bed warmer uses in more than 16 hours. This guide explains how much each size consumes, how much it costs per month depending on use, what the models sold in Chile today cost, and what to check before buying one.

How much power an electric bed warmer uses

Consumption depends on power, which is printed on the control's label. In Siegen's models, power is 60 W per control: a single bed warmer (150 x 80 cm) has one control and uses 60 W; a double (150 x 140 cm) or maxi (152 x 190 cm) one has two controls, one for each side, and adds up to 120 W when both are on. That is the maximum: at lower settings the appliance runs less of the time and uses less.

To go from watts to kWh, multiply the power by the hours of use and divide by 1,000. A 120 W bed warmer on for one hour uses 0.12 kWh; eight hours on maximum, 0.96 kWh, less than one kilowatt-hour for the whole night. The peso figures are Energía Futura calculations using CGE's BT1 residential tariff in force since October 2026, CLP 255.27 per kWh, according to its tariff schedule.

What an electric bed warmer costs per month in pesos

The most efficient way to use it is to preheat the bed for 30 minutes to an hour before going to sleep and switch it off when you get in. Used that way, a double bed warmer uses about 3.6 kWh a month, around CLP 919. A single one, half that: 1.8 kWh, about CLP 459. Even left on all night at maximum, the double one reaches 28.8 kWh and about CLP 7,352 a month, the same a 2,000 W electric heater uses in under 15 hours.

A full cold season, from May to September (about 153 days), costs about 18.4 kWh with a double bed warmer, close to CLP 4,700, if used one hour a day. To compare it with other forms of heating, see how much low-consumption electric heaters cost to run: a bed warmer does not heat the room, but it costs a fraction.

Prices in Chile: single, double and king

In Chilean stores, a single bed warmer starts at about CLP 28,990 and a double one at about CLP 49,990. Models with a digital control, 9 levels and a shut-off timer cost over CLP 90,000. For king or super king beds there are maxi versions, such as the Siegen SG-5501 at 152 x 190 cm or the Scaldasonno Maxi Adapto at 200 x 150 cm. These are the prices published on 5 November 2026:

The price difference is not in consumption, which is almost the same across models, but in size, fabric (cotton, polyester), number of levels, a digital control and features such as a shut-off timer, which prevents leaving it on all night by mistake.

Electric bed warmer or electric blanket: the difference

A bed warmer goes on top of the mattress and under the sheet, and warms the bed from below. An electric blanket goes over the person, in bed or on the sofa, and also works for watching TV or working seated. Their consumption is similar: a few dozen watts. Scaldasonno sells electric blankets of 150 x 95 cm for CLP 39,990 and 160 x 120 cm for CLP 53,990 in its official store (sale price as of 5 November 2026).

Searches show how seasonal the product is: in Chile, "calientacamas" goes from about 1,600 monthly searches in summer to 60,500 in May, almost 38 times more, according to Google Ads data retrieved by Energía Futura through DataForSEO. Buying off-season usually means better prices.

Which model to buy

  • Size: choose the one that fits your mattress. A double with two controls lets each person choose their level and switch off their side.
  • Levels and timer: a control with several levels and automatic shut-off lowers the cost and avoids leaving it on all night.
  • Safety: look for overheating protection, such as the "Blocking System" Siegen describes in its models, and the SEC seal, Chile's safety certification for electrical products.
  • Washing: check whether it is washable and at what temperature; Siegen's models state 40 °C, always without the control.
  • Power: it should be on the label. Between 60 W and 120 W, the difference on the bill is a few hundred pesos a month.

A bed warmer does not replace a heater for the whole house, but it does let you lower the bedroom temperature at night. If your household uses kerosene, compare with what a kerosene heater costs to run: a night of bed warmer costs less than a few minutes of heater.

How to use it to spend less and stay safe

The basic advice is to preheat and switch off: turn it on high 30 to 60 minutes before bed and switch it off or turn it to minimum when you get in. That keeps the cost minimal and avoids sleeping with an appliance on. If the model has a timer, set the shut-off to one or two hours.

Do not fold it while it is on, put heavy objects on it or use it with a damaged cable or fabric. Check it every season before first use. In an average Chilean home, which uses about 180 kWh a month as we calculated in how much electricity a home in Chile uses per month, a bed warmer used one hour a day accounts for less than 2% of the bill.

Frequently asked questions

How much power does a double bed warmer use?

About 120 W with both controls on (60 W per side in Siegen's models): 0.12 kWh per hour, about CLP 31 with electricity at CLP 255.27 per kWh.

How much does a bed warmer cost per month?

Used one hour a day, a double model costs about CLP 919 a month and a single one about CLP 459. All night on maximum, the double one reaches about CLP 7,352.

Does a bed warmer or an electric heater use more electricity?

The heater, by far. A 2,000 W heater costs about CLP 511 an hour, the same as a double bed warmer in more than 16 hours.

Can you sleep with the bed warmer on?

It is best to use it to warm the bed and switch it off or leave it on minimum when you get in. Models with a shut-off timer and overheating protection are safer.

How much does a bed warmer cost in Chile?

From about CLP 28,990 for a single and CLP 49,990 for a double; digital models with 9 levels and maxi or king sizes cost between CLP 82,990 and CLP 124,990 (prices as of 5 November 2026).
