Gasoline prices in Latin America 2026: country ranking and where Chile stands

Updated on 23 October 2026. The price of gasoline in Chile is the sixth highest in Latin America: US$1.53 per litre (CLP 1,487.83) as of 19 October 2026, tied with Honduras and above the world average of US$1.47, according to data from GlobalPetrolPrices. The most expensive in the region is Uruguay, at US$2.25, and the cheapest is Bolivia, at US$0.60.

The Chilean figure predates the increase on Thursday 22 October, when gasoline rose by CLP 41.3 per litre. With that adjustment, and if other countries do not change, Chile's reference price would be around US$1.57, the fourth highest in the region. This is the full gasoline and diesel ranking.

Ranking of gasoline prices in Latin America

The table ranks countries by the price of mid-octane gasoline (95 in Chile), in dollars per litre and in local currency. GlobalPetrolPrices publishes average retail prices, including taxes:

The gap between the most expensive and the cheapest is almost fourfold. Filling a 50-litre tank costs US$112 in Uruguay, about US$77 in Chile and US$30 in Bolivia. The gaps are mainly due to taxes and subsidies: oil costs the same for everyone, but each country decides how much it taxes or subsidises fuel.

Diesel prices in Latin America

For diesel, the fuel of freight transport, buses and mining, the order changes. Chile ranks lower, but also with a figure from before the CLP 91.5 increase of 22 October:

#CountryDiesel (US$ per litre)
1Peru1.92
2Costa Rica1.73
3Argentina1.62
4Uruguay1.56
5Bolivia1.54
6Paraguay1.53
7Panama1.52

9Honduras1.49
10Guatemala1.48
11Mexico1.46

14Nicaragua1.17
15Dominican Republic1.16
16Colombia0.95
17Ecuador0.82

Bolivia is a striking case: its gasoline is the cheapest, but its diesel is among the most expensive. The country changed its fuel subsidies from late 2025, and its price in dollars depends heavily on the exchange rate used.

Why the price of gasoline in Chile is above average

Chile imports almost all the oil it consumes and does not permanently subsidise fuel. The pump price includes the specific tax on fuels, VAT, refining, transport and distribution margins, and the effect of Mepco, the mechanism that smooths international price rises and falls.

Mepco forces prices to rise gradually when the international price exceeds the local one. That is why gasoline and diesel have risen five times in a row since July: diesel is up CLP 401.4 per litre and gasoline CLP 183.4, as we detailed in the article on the fuel price increase. With increases still pending, Chile could climb further in the regional ranking.

At the other end are countries that produce oil and subsidise it, such as Ecuador and Bolivia, or that set prices through state companies, such as Colombia for diesel. Uruguay, which produces no oil, has the most expensive gasoline in the region because of import costs and a high tax burden on fuel.

Gasoline and electricity: the cost of getting around

With gasoline above the world average and residential electricity also expensive for the region, the cost of getting around in Chile is high either way. A gasoline car that uses 7 litres per 100 km pays about CLP 10,400 in Chile for those 100 km at the 19 October price. An electric car that uses 16 kWh per 100 km, charged at home with electricity at CLP 255.27 per kWh, pays about CLP 4,100. Entry-level models and their prices are in the guide to the cheapest electric cars.

The regional comparison also changes with the fuel: Chile has the fourth most expensive residential electricity in Latin America, as shown in the ranking of electricity prices in Latin America, and the sixth most expensive gasoline. Even so, thanks to the efficiency of the electric motor, each electric kilometre costs less than half of one on gasoline.

How much it costs to fill the tank in each country

For a Chilean driver, the most direct way to compare is the cost of filling a 50-litre gasoline tank, converted to Chilean pesos with the exchange rate implied in the GlobalPetrolPrices data (about CLP 972 per dollar):

Country50-litre tank (US$)50-litre tank (Chilean pesos)
Uruguay112.5about CLP 109,400
Peru84.5about CLP 82,200
Costa Rica84.0about CLP 81,700
Mexico77.0about CLP 74,900
Chile (19 October)76.5CLP 74,392
Chile (after the 22 October increase)about 78.6about CLP 76,460
Argentina72.5about CLP 70,500
Colombia66.5about CLP 64,700
Brazil63.0about CLP 61,300
Ecuador42.0about CLP 40,800
Bolivia30.0about CLP 29,200

Energía Futura calculations with GlobalPetrolPrices prices as of 19 October 2026. Chile's post-increase figure adds the CLP 41.3 per litre reported by ENAP for 22 October. The conversions are indicative: each country's exchange rate varies from day to day.

The table shows that a Chilean pays almost the same as a Mexican to fill the tank and about CLP 35,000 less than a Uruguayan, but more than twice as much as a Bolivian. For those driving around the region, the differences show at the border: filling up in Argentina or Bolivia is usually cheaper than in Chile, while in Peru it is more expensive.

For transport companies, the diesel table matters more than the gasoline one. With diesel at around US$1.58 after the increase, Chilean freight transport pays one of the most expensive fuels in the region, behind only Peru, Costa Rica and Argentina, a factor that is driving the electrification of buses and trucks.

Methodology

Prices are those published by GlobalPetrolPrices.com on its country pages, updated as of 19 October 2026 and consulted on 23 October. They correspond to mid-octane gasoline and diesel, as average retail prices including taxes, converted to dollars at the exchange rate used by the source. The 17 Latin American countries with available data are included; Venezuela and Cuba have no price published in dollars. This ranking will be updated on this same page when prices change.
