The largest battery in the world 2026: ranking of the biggest energy storage systems
AdvertisingAdvertise Here

Updated on 20 October 2026. The largest battery system in the world in operation belongs to the Saudi Electricity Company: 7.8 GWh split across three sites of 2.6 GWh each, connected to the grid in December 2025, according to ESS News. At a single location, the record is held by Khavda, in India, where Adani Green Energy reported 6.63 GWh in operation in October 2026. Chile's largest battery is at Estela Solar, with 935 MWh.

The ranking changes every few months: two years ago, the world's largest battery held about 3 GWh. This list brings together the largest battery energy storage systems (BESS) in operation, measured by storable energy (GWh), with the source for each figure.

Chile is not in the global top five, so its systems are unnumbered.

One site or several: why there are two records

The Saudi system is a single project but spread over three substations in the country's south-west, each with 2.6 GWh connected at 380 kV. Counted by site, Khavda is the largest. Envision, for its part, presents Chagan Hada as the world's largest single-site electrochemical station; it belongs to a group of stations totalling 12.8 GWh in Inner Mongolia. Figures depend on how each company defines a “site”.

MW and MWh: the two numbers of a battery

A battery has two measures. Power (MW) is how much energy it can deliver at any moment; energy (MWh) is how long it can sustain it. Dividing the second by the first gives the duration: Edwards & Sanborn (971 MW and 3,287 MWh) lasts about 3.4 hours at full power; Collie (560 MW and 2,240 MWh), 4 hours; and Estela Solar (187 MW and 935 MWh), 5 hours. This ranking sorts by energy, because that defines how many hours of sunshine can be shifted to the night.

The largest battery in the world, in Saudi Arabia

The 7.8 GWh project belongs to the Saudi Electricity Company, with National Grid SA as offtaker. It was built by Algihaz Holding under a turnkey contract that includes operation and maintenance, with equipment from China's Sungrow, which signed the supply deal in July 2024. It is designed as a grid-forming system: it can restart the grid after a total blackout, provide virtual inertia and respond within milliseconds to frequency changes.

Saudi Arabia has about 30 GWh of batteries in its pipeline, one of the largest in the world, to accompany its solar plans. The big buyers of batteries are no longer just the United States, China and Australia: the Middle East and India are moving faster.

Khavda, the largest battery at a single location

Adani Green Energy reported on 1 October 2026 that its storage capacity at Khavda reached 6.63 GWh, up from 3.55 GWh in June. In May, at 3.37 GWh, the company had presented it as the world's largest outside China. Adani accounts for more than half of India's operating batteries, about 12.6 GWh in total, and plans to add more than 10 GWh in fiscal year 2026-27 and reach 50 GWh within five years.

The battery serves the Khavda renewable park, planned at 30 GW, which is also the largest solar park outside China, as we report in the largest solar plant in the world. The 6.63 GWh figure is a company announcement; we have not yet found independent confirmation.

The largest batteries in the United States and the Moss Landing case

In the United States, the largest operating system is Edwards & Sanborn, in Kern County, California: 3,287 MWh of storage alongside 875 MWdc of solar panels, with LG, Samsung and BYD batteries, completed by Mortenson for Terra-Gen in early 2024. For years, the record belonged to Vistra's Moss Landing, also in California.

Moss Landing is also the case that has most shaped the safety debate. On 16 January 2025, a fire destroyed the building housing its 300 MW, 1,200 MWh system. Vistra wrote down about US$400 million and decided not to bring one of its phases back; in September 2026 a new fire broke out during clean-up, involving batteries still on site, according to CalMatters. The industry has responded with lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, outdoor containers and stricter detection systems.

The largest batteries in Chile

For its size, Chile is one of the world's most dynamic storage markets, driven by surplus midday solar power. Its largest single battery in testing is at Estela Solar, in Pozo Almonte, with 187 MW and 935 MWh, which delivered 919 MWh in a five-hour discharge, as we reported in Estela Solar's test results.

Grenergy's Oasis de Atacama platform, together with Central Oasis, adds up to 3.9 GW of solar and 19.2 GWh of storage at various stages, according to the company; its first four phases are already operating. It is not a single system, but once complete it would be one of the world's largest battery portfolios. The national total is in Chile surpasses 3,000 MW of battery storage.

The Abu Dhabi project will combine 5.2 GW of panels with 19 GWh of batteries to deliver a constant 1 GW, day and night. If it meets its deadline, it would be the world's largest battery in a single project. The lithium behind these batteries is mined largely in Australia, China and Chile, as shown in the world's largest lithium producers.

Methodology and sources

The ranking sorts systems in operation by storable energy (MWh or GWh), using the figure reported by the operator or regulator. Where the operator does not report power, we leave it blank. Projects under construction are in a separate table. Capacity figures can change with expansions, as at Khavda, so we will update this ranking on this same page.
