A PlayStation 5 draws about 217 W while playing a PS5 title: 216.8 W for the current disc model (CFI-2016) and 215.2 W for the PS5 Pro, according to the measurements Sony publishes on its energy efficiency page to comply with European ecodesign rules. With electricity at CLP 255.27 per kWh, an hour of gaming costs about CLP 55, and playing two hours a day adds up to about CLP 3,321 a month.
Rest mode, on the other hand, uses very little if set up properly: 0.31 W in the default low-power mode and up to 3.8 W with all features on. This guide details how much each PS5 model consumes while gaming, watching films and resting, how much it costs per month and how it compares with the PS4 and the Nintendo Switch 2.

How much power the PlayStation 5 uses while gaming
Sony measures the consumption of each console version while playing PS5 titles in HD and 4K. The figures are averages from real gameplay, not the power supply's maximum rating. Every PS5 is around 200 to 220 W: the first units (CFI-1016A) drew 196.9 W and the current ones (CFI-2016) 216.8 W. The PS5 Pro (CFI-7021), despite its greater graphics power, records 215.2 W, practically the same.
| Model | Playing PS5 titles (HD) | Home menu | Video streaming | Default rest mode |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original PS5 with disc drive (CFI-1016A) | 196.9 W | 43.1 W | 55.6 W | 0.3 W |
| Original PS5 digital (CFI-1016B) | 198.3 W | 41.7 W | 54.5 W | 0.3 W |
| PS5 with disc drive (CFI-1216A) | 209.8 W | 45.6 W | 56.1 W | 0.38 W |
| PS5 Slim with disc drive (CFI-2016) | 216.8 W | 46.4 W | 56.3 W | 0.31 W |
| PS5 Slim digital (CFI-2016) | 214.3 W | 46.4 W | 56.3 W | 0.31 W |

Playing in 4K barely changes the bill: Sony measures 217.7 W on the PS5 Slim with UHD output, against 216.8 W in HD, because the console runs at full load in both cases and only the final resolution changes. What does matter is playing time and the type of game: the most demanding titles keep the processor and graphics at their maximum throughout, while a light game or a paused one lowers consumption. The home menu, for example, uses about 46 W, a fifth as much.
Watching films uses much less: a Blu-ray on the PS5 Slim draws 50.5 W, a 4K disc film 80.4 W and streaming series 56.3 W. Playing PS4 titles on the PS5 lowers consumption to about 107 W, half that of a native game.
How much a PS5 costs per month in pesos
With the PS5 Slim's 216.8 W and electricity at CLP 255.27 per kWh, according to CGE's tariff sheet in force since October 2026, an hour of gaming uses 0.217 kWh and costs CLP 55. As of 6 November, CGE had not yet published its November sheet. Depending on how many hours you play, the monthly cost looks like this:
| Use (30 days) | Monthly consumption | Monthly cost | Yearly cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 hour of gaming a day | 6.5 kWh | CLP 1,660 | CLP 19,923 |
| 2 hours of gaming a day | 13.0 kWh | CLP 3,321 | CLP 39,847 |
| 4 hours of gaming a day | 26.0 kWh | CLP 6,641 | CLP 79,693 |
| 2 hours a day of series streaming | 3.4 kWh | CLP 862 | CLP 10,348 |
| Rest mode with all features (22 h a day) | 2.5 kWh | CLP 640 | CLP 7,682 |
| Low-power rest mode (22 h a day) | 0.2 kWh | CLP 52 | CLP 627 |
Energía Futura calculations with Sony's measurements for the PS5 Slim (CFI-2016) and electricity at CLP 255.27 per kWh. The TV or monitor must be added on top, since it has its own consumption, as we explain in how much a TV consumes.
Two hours a day for a year add up to about 158 kWh, close to CLP 40,000. In an average home that uses about 180 kWh a month, as we calculated in how much electricity a home in Chile uses, a moderately used PS5 accounts for around 7% of the bill.

How much the PS5 uses in rest mode
The PS5's rest mode has several features that can be turned on separately in Settings > System > Power Saving: charging controllers over USB, staying connected to the internet to download games and updates, or both. Each one raises consumption, according to Sony's measurements:
| Rest mode | PS5 Slim (CFI-2016) | PS5 Pro (CFI-7021) | Original PS5 (CFI-1016A) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low power (default) | 0.31 W | 0.3 W | 0.3 W |
| Internet connection only | 1.2 W | 1.0 W | 1.0 W |
| USB charging only | 3.6 W | 3.4 W | 3.7 W |
| All features | 3.8 W | 3.6 W | 3.7 W |
Source: Sony Interactive Entertainment, energy efficiency information. Rest mode with every feature on costs about CLP 640 a month; low-power mode, about CLP 52. USB charging weighs the most: if the controllers do not need charging every night, turning it off saves most of it.
PS5 versus PS5 Pro, PS4 and Nintendo Switch 2
The PS5 Pro uses practically the same as the PS5 Slim while gaming (215.2 W against 216.8 W): its better graphics do not translate into a higher bill. Compared with the previous generation, the PS5 uses more: the PS4 Pro (CUH-72XX) averaged 146.4 W and the PS4 Slim (CUH-22XX) 78.2 W. Sony's page does not include Xbox figures, and Microsoft does not have an equivalent table available, so we have left it out.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is in another league: according to its official specifications, it draws 19 W while playing in TV mode, 8 W in the menu and 0.5 W in standby with wifi. Nintendo estimates its annual consumption at 14 kWh playing two hours a day, about CLP 3,574 a year: less than a PS5 uses in just over a month.
| Console | Gaming | Cost per hour | Monthly cost (2 h a day) |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 Slim (CFI-2016) | 216.8 W | CLP 55 | CLP 3,321 |
| PS5 Pro (CFI-7021) | 215.2 W | CLP 55 | CLP 3,296 |
| Original PS5 (CFI-1016A) | 196.9 W | CLP 50 | CLP 3,016 |
| PS4 Pro (CUH-72XX) | 146.4 W | CLP 37 | CLP 2,242 |
| PS4 Slim (CUH-22XX) | 78.2 W | CLP 20 | CLP 1,198 |
| Nintendo Switch 2 (TV mode) | 19 W | CLP 5 | CLP 291 |
Sources: Sony (PS5 and PS4, HD averages) and Nintendo (Switch 2 with Mario Kart World in TV mode). Cost calculated by Energía Futura with electricity at CLP 255.27 per kWh. If you play on PC, compare with how much a gaming PC consumes: a rig with a high-end graphics card can far exceed a PS5.

How to lower the PS5's consumption
- Use low-power rest mode and turn on USB charging only when the controllers need it: it goes from 3.8 W to 0.31 W.
- Set automatic power-off in Settings > System > Power Saving, so the console goes into rest mode if left on the menu.
- Watch series on the TV or a streaming device, not on the console: the PS5 uses 56 W just to play video.
- Turn the TV off with the console and lower its brightness: it often uses as much as the PS5 itself on the menu.
- Ventilate the console well: a hot console makes its fans work harder.
